On the boardwalk in New Jersey people were standing right next to each other, very few wearing masks. Not long ago a large group of protesters invaded the Michigan state capitol building, some with firearms, including assault-style weapons. It looked like there were several hundred crammed into the main room.

These reckless people are Trump’s lemmings, and they are a distinct threat to their fellow Americans.

They don’t follow the rules, they make their own. If Trump refuses to wear a mask, they follow his example. They are like puppets on Trump’s strings, they have been mind-conditioned by him to think as he does, He never stresses social distancing, and they say it’s not at all necessary. The famous, old story of these lemmings jumping off the cliff is, of course, a myth. But why is it still so widely believed? Because it is an analogy for human behavior, for persons who blindly follow a crowd even though it may lead to a disastrous end. There is the Lemming Effect that enables entire segments of a society to lose their sense of judgment, all at the same time. These lemmings see him ignoring the Rule of Law, dismissing the Constitution as being irrelevant. They watch as he fires four Inspector Generals who were doing their jobs, they applaud him as he works to take control of the FBI undermines our intelligence agencies, and corrupts the Justice Dept.Īnd, instead of helping to try to save what’s left of our democracy, they do nothing, look the other way, and put on their blinders and earplugs when it is being attacked. And, by their slavish, subservient behavior, they are preparing to go over the cliffs, right behind their Dear Leader.Lemmings are small rodents with long, soft, colorful fur and short tails that live in the Arctic tundra. They reproduce rapidly, and their population varies dramatically, usually over a four-year cycle. Scientists have studied the variation in lemming populations for many years, but they don’t entirely understand it. However, the lemming suicide myth is not an explanation.Ĭontrary to popular stories, lemmings do not commit mass suicide by jumping off cliffs into the sea to drown. We are also partial to the name, World War IV.In the sixteenth century, because of their rapid population increases, a story was started that they fall out of the sky when it rains.

In fact, the word "lemming" comes from the Norwegian "lemmus" which means destruction.Īre there any up-and-coming death metal bands in our reader-base? Feel free to use the name. Lemmings can be fierce little buggers, bearing their teeth when approached and decimating entire sections of countryside of vegetation. They might look cute, but they do not have a reputation for cuddliness. They are often be so focused on moving forward in a frenzied rate, that they can plunge straight off of embankments, as seen in this video. Instead, overpopulation and density triggers a migration reaction in the little rodents, causing a frantic and single-minded migration across long distances in search of greener pastures. While they sometimes do fall to their deaths, they are not consciously committing suicide. One popular myth about lemmings is that they react to overpopulation by leaping off of cliffs to their death. Though the little rodents (Norway lemmings, Lemus lemus) have not yet begun swarming in a locust-like frenzy, they have been turning up all over Lapland, including drowned in the nets of salmon fishermen, clinging to the oar of a rower and attached to a woman's ankle as it bit her. Northern Finland is experiencing its largest lemming migration in 20 years, according to t his article in Helsingin Sanomat's "International Edition" (we never miss an issue!).
